Maya studied French Academic Art, which focuses on a realistic and rational representation of the subject, at Penninghen in Paris. Penninghen, a school of art direction and interior design, was formerly known as the Académie Julian and notable alumni include Henri Matisse, Robert Rauschenberg and Edouard Vuillard.
“Horse,” “Portrait I,” and “Portrait II” were made from observation of sculptures in the school’s collection. The printing press was created by Hippolyte Marinoni in 1886 and is on display at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris. The drawing of architectural details was made at the Musée d’Orsay.
